Muzaffarpur: A man was lynched by a mob here after he allegedly shot at and injured a person in a village in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district today, police said.
Muzaffarpur (East) Deputy Superintendent of Police Mutaffiq Ahmad said the incident took place at Rupanpatti Mathurapur panchayat and the victim has been identified as Sujit Kumar.
A pistol and a bullet was recovered from his possession.
Ahmad said armed miscreants had raided the house of Rupanpatti Mathurapur village 'mukhiya' (head) and fired at his father, causing him serious injuries.
Hearing the gun shot, the 'mukhiya' rushed out and the attackers fired at him too, but he escaped unhurt.
Meanwhile, villagers surrounded the attackers and managed to catch hold of Kumar, a resident of Seho village in the area. He was thrashed to death on the spot, Ahmad said.
The village head's father has been admitted to a hospital where his condition is stated to be critical, the DSP said.
Police is investigating the incident and an FIR has been registered in this connection.
