DCW appointment row: LG's consent essential, says Barkha Shukla

Following the cancellation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Swati Maliwal's appointment as the chief of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), former Congress MLA Barkha Shukla Singh on Wednesday said Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung's consent is essential in the matter.

New Delhi: Following the cancellation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Swati Maliwal's appointment as the chief of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), former Congress MLA Barkha Shukla Singh on Wednesday said Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung's consent is essential in the matter.

"Every appointment has to be made according to the Constitution. Kejriwal ji knows it, but these people do not pay heed to the Constitution, they like to do everything on their own....Lieutenant Governor's consent is essential in this matter, LG has powers in this matter as Delhi is not like other states," Singh told ANI.

"Kejriwal ji is not interested in doing work, but is keener on fighting," she added.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung earlier in the day cancelled the appointment of Maliwal as the chief of the DCW.

Maliwal, who is an RTI activist and also the youngest member of India Against Corruption, took charge as the DCW chief two days ago, succeeding Barkha Shukla.

Kejriwal drew sharp criticism from the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for appointing Maliwal, who is the wife of AAP leader Naveen Jaihind, as the DCW chief.
