Deaths at metro stations dropped by 50 pc in 2013: Dasmunshi

The number of deaths at the metro stations in the national capital region has dropped by almost 50 per cent in 2013 as compared to previous year, following implementation of various measures, Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday.

New Delhi: The number of deaths at the metro stations in the national capital region has dropped by almost 50 per cent in 2013 as compared to previous year, following implementation of various measures, Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday.

Minister of State for Urban Development Deepa Dashmunshi, while replying to a question in the upper house, said that 13 persons died by either falling on the metro tracks or from elevated structures on road in 2013 in the NCR.

However, 22 cases were reported in the previous year of 2012 in NCR, comprising Delhi and parts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Listing out measures to prevent the occurrence of suicides in metro stations, she highlighted the installation of screen doors at Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, New Delhi and Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat metro stations.

Increasing the height of railing at platform ends, besides the elevated stations and securing unused areas of platforms by placing bollards are some of the other measures taken to prevent occurrence of suicides, Dasmunshi added.
