Athens, Oct 26: A huge chunk of industrial
waste is making its way straight into the Mediterranean Sea
every year, a study has found.
Experts in the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP) have found out that millions of tons of pollutants are
being dumped into the Mediterranean every year by industries
that border the region.
"We were surprised by the extent of the phenomenon, it is
alarming, it concerns very large quantities," UNEP expert
Fouad Abousamara underscored during a news conference Monday
According to the study, metal working industries alone
are responsible for dumping of more than 2.5 million tons of
toxic waste in the sea.
