Goa: Congress questions move to reinstate cops being probed by CBI

The Congress party here on Wednesday questioned CBI's move to grant a 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) reinstating seven policemen, who were being probed by the agency itself for allegedly selling seized drugs back to the narcotics mafia.

Panaji: The Congress party here on Wednesday questioned CBI's move to grant a 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) reinstating seven policemen, who were being probed by the agency itself for allegedly selling seized drugs back to the narcotics mafia.

"The party will write to CBI headquarters and Prime Minister Narendra Modi questioning how NOC was given to reinstate policemen being probed for their narcotics mafia nexus," party's Goa unit spokesperson Sunil Kawathankar told reporters today.

Goa Home Department had reinstated police inspector Ashish Shirodkar, police sub-inspector Punaji Gawas and five other constables who were suspended and arrested in 2010 after allegedly being found selling confiscated drugs in the open market.

"The CBI has to clarify its position. Is it political pressure? We feel there was political pressure to reinstate these officers," Kawathankar said, adding that Congress would also write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Shirodkar and others were reinstated by the department yesterday.

Revocation of their suspension came almost five years after they were arrested by the Crime Branch.

The case is currently being probed by the CBI.
