Cold wave intensifies in Punjab, Haryana; fog dissipates

Bright sunshine in several parts of Punjab and Haryana provided some relief from ongoing foggy conditions, putting air, rail, and road traffic on track to some extent.

Chandigarh: Bright sunshine in several parts of Punjab and Haryana provided some relief from ongoing foggy conditions, putting air, rail, and road traffic on track to some extent.

Of the 15 flights operating from Chandigarh airport, most are on scheduled time, officials said, adding the trains, including Kalka, Shan-e-Punjab, Tata Moori and Shatabdi Express were running slightly behind schedule.

While some areas in the region got relief from foggy conditions, the ongoing cold wave intensified in other parts of Punjab and Haryana.

The night temperatures remained at above normal limits, but dropped by an average of around two degrees Celsius, the MeT office said.

The MeT forecast cloudy conditions with possibility of mist and fog at most parts in the region in the coming days, including on Republic day.

"Weather will be cloudy in Punjab and Haryana on January 26, but there is no possibility of rain at present," Chandigarh MeT director Surinderpal Singh said.

The minimum temperature dropped in the region by around two degrees Celsius, the MeT office said, adding the mercury settled at above normal limits in the region during the night.

The minimum temperature hovered between two to six degrees Celsius above normal in most parts of Punjab and Haryana, the MeT office said.

Meanwhile due to clear weather, foggy conditions disrupting normal life in the region for the past some days eased out.

While Patiala settled at a low of 10.9 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal, the mercury recorded 10.4 degrees Celsius in Ludhiana, industrial hub of Punjab, which was three notches above normal.

Among other places, Hisar in Haryana had a low of 13 degrees Celsius which was, however, six notches above normal followed by 11 degrees Celsius at Narnaul, six notches above normal, 10.2 degrees Celsius at Bhiwani, 10 degrees Celsius at Chandigarh, four notches above normal, 8.7 degrees Celsius at Ambala, two notches above normal and 8.1 degrees Celsius at Amritsar, five notches above normal.
