The Jodhpur boom: One of India's greatest mysteries

December 18, 2012 was just another normal day in Jodhpur but that changed at 11:25 am when residents of Rajasthan's second biggest city were startled by a deafening boom.

With the world being in the grip of 'End of the World Dec 21' rumour that year, initially some took the sound as the warning bell for the impending end of the human race, panicking lakhs of people.

Soon, someone suggested that the sound – which resembled that of a massive explosion – was due to the breaking of the sound barrier by an IAF over Jodhpur. Others floated the theory that a nearby army ammunition depot had gone up in smoke.

However, the defence establishment later denied any sonic boom or any other such explosion.

But the people of Jodhpur had heard it loud and clear...what's even more stranger is that similar unexplained booms were reported from many other parts of the world that month, and in places it was accompanied with a green light.

Were the booms connected with each other in some way...the mystery remains unanswered.
