Jabalpur: The Madhya Pradesh High Court
on Friday issued notice to the state government on a PIL on the
issue of compensation to families of farmers who committed
suicide in recent weeks due to the crop failure.
The division bench of Chief Justice Rafat Alam and
Justice R S Jhato issued notices to the Agriculture
Department`s Principal Secretary with a direction to file
reply within 15 days.

The PIL has been filed by P G Najpande of Nagrik Upbhokta
Manch.

The bench wanted to know what steps the state has taken
for awarding compensation to the farmers who were hit by frost
and cold wave, and on what basis.
Najpande has said in the petition that though Chief
Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced relief to the
tune of crores of rupees, the farmers are not getting anything
due to the insensitive government machinery.
