Ten activists of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), including three of its senior leaders, were detained in Srinagar on Saturday as they tried to stage a protest violating prohibitory orders, official sources said.
The activists were taken into custody as they sat on a dharna on the Residency road near Abi Guzar after marching on the main road, they said. Police detained party vice-president Mehbooba Mufti, former minister and senior leader Ghulam Hassan Mir, general secretary Tariq Hamid Karra and seven others, sources said.
The PDP activists assembled at Partap Park here and raised slogans against the state government, POTA and Gujarat killings as part of the party's protest programme. The demonstration disrupted traffic along the Residency road and Lal Chowk. Shopkeepers also downed the shutters. A police spokesman said it was a preventive detention and all of them would be released soon.
