Assembly polls 2014: EC to step up security management to check money, muscle power

In a bid to check the role of money and muscle power in coming Assembly polls in four states, the Election Commission is taking steps to strengthen security management system and use of technology, Election Commissioner HS Brahma said here on Friday.

Puri: In a bid to check the role of money and muscle power in coming Assembly polls in four states, the Election Commission is taking steps to strengthen security management system and use of technology, Election Commissioner HS Brahma said here on Friday.

Initiatives taken in this direction during the 2014 General Elections were successful to a great extent which helped the EC immensely, Brahma told a symposium here on "Best Electoral Practices".

Stating that the thrust was on minimum use of manpower and maximum utilisation of machines, he said greater use of technology and modern systems were now proving to be immensely helpful in raising efficiency.

The same method would be applied for the coming elections in four states to check use of money and muscle power during the polls to a great extent, he said.

Maintaining that the EC had stepped up efforts to create awareness among voters which helped increase in the percentage of votes, the Election Commissioner said successful conduct of the recent elections had set an example for other democratic countries in the world.

Election officers from 12 states along with district Superintendents of Police of respective areas attended the symposium in which topics like Voters Education and Electoral Publication, Innovation in use of Technology, Expenditure Monitoring & Tackling Money Power, Management of Electoral Rolls and Security Management were discussed.
