CBI has launched a drive to cut down pendency of cases and set up more special courts for the purpose, an agency official said in New Delhi on Wednesday.
CBI spokesman S M Khan told reporters in New Delhi that stress would be laid on setting up of more special courts to try cases and get early sanction from the appointing authorities in the case of government servants.

He said that 12 special courts had been set up recently in various states to speed up trial of CBI cases and more such courts are proposed to be set up at all the state capitals.

He said that of the 240 cases, including 120 in which sanction to prosecute from appointing authority was awaited, were pending as on December 2001 as against a backlog of 356 cases the year before. The total pendency with CBI on December 31,2001 was 1,456 cases, he said adding that about 6,000 cases were pending before courts all over the country.

Khan said that among the old cases were those concerning the Airbus A-320 deal and HDW sub-marine cases in which legal request had been sent to foreign countries as investigations in the cases required to be held abroad.

He said that on an average between 1.100 and 1.200 case are registered by CBI annually which includes around 200 on the directions of various courts and about 100, which are referred by various state governments.

He said that CBI had a conviction rate of 70 per cent.
