New Delhi, June 06: The Congress today said that it would accept whatever decision President K R Narayanan takes on its offer of support for a second term to him and expected that the clouds would be clear on the issue before the presidential poll schedule is announced.

“We have left the matter to the President. Whatever mind he indicates either way, we will accept it with respect,” party spokesman Anand Sharma told reporters in reply to a volley of questions including that the People's Front which included left parties appeared divided over Narayanan's candidature.
He also reiterated the party view that it regarded Narayanan as one of our excellent Presidents.

Asked whether elections were inevitable for the highest office, he said that the Congress has always favoured the route of consensus and the tradition has been by and large followed.
He said that the party expected that there would be a meeting between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Congress president Sonia Gandhi soon on the issue.

Asked about the party's view of abiding by the convention of elevating vice-president to the highest office, he said that it would not be appropriate to comment on it now.
