Congress on Friday said it would meet President K R Narayanan next month to demand removal of Gujarat Governor Sundar Singh Bhandari for his alleged RSS antecedents.

Addressing a press conference in Gandhinagar on Friday, opposition leader in the state assembly Amarsinh Chaudhary alleged that "Bhandari, because of his RSS links, is not fit and eligible to adorn the constitutional post of governor".
Chaudhary, alongwith seven other party MLAs, was on Thursday suspended from the assembly for "showing disrespect to the chair and lowering the image of the house and
legislators."

Subsequently, the Congress MLAs indulged in vandalism in the assembly premises and also ransacked the speaker's cabin. This led to filing of a criminal case in the police station in Gandhinagar against seven Congress MLAs by the sergeant of assembly secretariat.
The opposition leader sought time from the governor to meet him alongwith a delegation of Congress MLAs and independents to submit him a memorandum in this regard.

He alleged that the governor refused to entertain the entire delegation and expressed willingness to meet only five of them.

"When he insisted on meeting only five of us, we decided not to give him the memorandum. We will now give the memorandum to the president and also ask him to remove Bhandari for his RSS leanings and attempt to shield the irregularities of the BJP government in the state," Chaudhary added.
