Kolkata, Aug 14: Child rapist and murderer Dhananjoy Chatterjee was hanged to death early this morning as human rights groups held candle-lit protests outside the Alipore Central Jail.
West Bengal Home Secretary Amit Kiran Deb told that the convict was hanged at 4:30 am as scheduled.
According to the procedure for execution, the body was kept hanging for 30 minutes.
IG (Prisons) Joydev Chakraborty said, the mandatory post mortem on the body had been conducted.
The body, which Dhananjoy`s family had refused to accept, had been handed over to the Hindu Satkar Samiti for cremation at the Keoratala burning grounds, he said.
Dhananjoy had been convicted for the rape and murder of Hetal Parekh at her home at the Anand Apartments in Bhowanipore in 1990.
The IG (Prisons) said that Dhananjoy`s eyes which he had wished to donate after his death, could not be taken as consent of his family had not been received.
As for his kidney, which he had also wanted to donate, this could also not be done as certain procedures had to be followed.
The road outside the jail was turned into a veritable fortress since last night with both ends barricaded.
It was pitch dark and raining heavily at Dhananjoy`s Kuludihi village in Bankura when he mounted the scaffold with West Bengal`s official executioner Nata Mullick pulling the lever.
The small village, which has no electricity, witnessed a beefed up police presence.
Dhananjoy`s father, Bangshidhar, mother Belarani and wife Poornima were visited by their neighbours to comfort them. Bankura Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar told mediaperasons that the family members had relapsed into sullen silence, refusing to speak to anyone.
The police, he said, were not only present in strength, but were also there to offer assistance to the family if needed. A three-member medical team is on standby for monitoring their health condition, he said.
The policemen were deployed as a precaution in view of the earlier threat by family members to commit suicide if Dhananjoy was hanged.
