India should have rightful place in UNSC: Antony

India on Tuesday made a strong case for its "rightful place" in the UN Security Council to enable it to make significant contribution to global security as a major stake-holder and responsible power.

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) Pitching for "non-discriminatory"
international norms and institutions, India today made a
strong case for its "rightful place" in the UN Security
Council to enable it to make significant contribution to
global security as a major stake-holder and responsible power.

Defence Minister A K Antony said India is engaged in a
major diplomatic effort to construct a new security order in
Asia and beyond through bilateral and multilateral
engagements.

"India is committed to build strong, non-discriminatory
international norms and institutions, so as to strengthen
world peace and stability," he said addressing the 11th Asian
Security Conference here.

Antony did not refer to any specific international
institution but was apparently referring to global bodies like
UN which New Delhi maintains need reform to represent
contemporary realities.

"India hopes to gain its rightful place in the UN
Security Council and make significant contribution to global
security as a major stake-holder and responsible power," he
said.

Antony said India has resolved to work with the
international community on global and universal nuclear
disarmament and institutions that have legitimacy and enhance
security of all states.

Referring to India-specific waiver granted by the Nuclear
Supplier`s Group (NSG) in September last year, he said it had
put aside a major road-block in India`s role and future
development.

"For four decades, India had been subjected to an unfair
and discriminatory international nuclear regime that has been
brought to an end.
