JPC clears tribals` Forest Land Rights Bill

The Joint Parliament Committee, which was studying the bill to grant land rights to forest- dwelling tribals, has submitted its recommendations which were now being considered by a group of ministers headed by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

New Delhi, July 21: The Joint Parliament Committee,
which was studying the bill to grant land rights to forest-
dwelling tribals, has submitted its recommendations which were
now being considered by a group of ministers headed by Defence
Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Stating this, Tribal Affairs Minister P R Kyndiah told
reporters here that the GoM has already held a meeting to
consider the JPC recommendations and would soon finalise the
changes in the legislation.

"We are trying to make it as comprehensive as possible,"
he said.

Once finalised, the bill would be sent to the union
cabinet for approval and then tabled in Parliament.

Officials said efforts would be made to table the major
bill in the ensuing monsoon session of Parliament, starting
Monday.

The Left parties have been demanding the early passage of
the legislation to grant land rights to forest-dwelling
tribals.
