New Delhi: The Election Commission has decided not to reserve the Mirzapur Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh for Scheduled Castes but reserved Obra and Duddhi assembly constituencies for Scheduled Tribes. As part of its proposal for readjustment of seats for representation of SCs and STs in Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, the poll panel took the decision after disposing of objections raised from various quarters during their public hearings in Varanasi, Saharanpur and Jhansi. The EC had proposed to reserve the Mirzapur parliamentary constituency for SCs and dereserve Robertsganj seat in its place, but was faced with number of objections. After receiving revised population figures from Registrar General of India, the Commission has also proposed to add one more reserve Assembly constituency from the existing 85 for SCs/STs in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly. Under a notification issued by the Commission, Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath and Election Commissioners H S Brahma and S N A Zaidi disposed of objections to its proposal and decided to reserve two seats for ST. While the total reserved Assembly constituencies for SCs will be reduced from the present 85 to 84, two more new constituencies will henceforth be reserved for STs in the state. At present there is no reserved constituency for STs in the state. The EC had also proposed to dereserve and reserve some assembly constituencies in the state but has decided against doing so after objections from the public. While the Obra assembly constituency was earlier a general constituency, the Duddhi constituency was reserved for scheduled castes. The readjustment of seats has been made by the Commission under the provisions of the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies (Third) Ordinance, 2013, for readjustment of SC/ST seats in Parliamentary and assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.
