New Delhi: Noting that requests for
deployment of the specialised National Disaster Relief Force
come almost every week, Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday said
the NDRF cannot be used for every disaster.
"This is a specialised force...On account of their
specialisation, the requests for deploying of NDRF come almost
every week. But I want to caution the NDMA and DG NDRF that it
cannot become substitute for state fire fighting services," he
said at the Raising Day function of the force here.
"We must regain our capacity to intervene only in places
of major disasters, natural or man-made," he said.
Chidambaram said other countries too have similar forces
but perhaps no nation has a force as large as ours.
NDMA vice chairman Shashidhar Reddy, who was also present
at the event, sought expedition of a number of proposals that
are lying with the Home Ministry, including sanction of
recommended uniforms for disaster relief operations.
NDRF, which was raised in 2006 to deal with all natural
and man-made disasters including Chemical Biological
Radiological emergencies, comprised of nine battalions -- two
each from CRPF, CISF and ITBP, and three from BSF. The 10th is
being raised from the CRPF.
