New Delhi, June 08: Asserting that there is no change in its stand of supporting President K R Narayanan for his second term, Congress today said that it is still awaiting a response from him.

“We have made an offer to him. We have only one name (Naryanan) and we are still awaiting a response from him. He has not said yes or no to our offer,” Congress spokesman Jaipal Reddy said.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi held consultations with her senior party colleagues this evening on the party's strategy in the July 15 presidential elections.

Later, Reddy told reporters here that the party favoured a second term for Narayanan in view of his exceptionally good performance.

The Congress Working Committee had earlier authorised Gandhi to take a decision in this regard. Following the CWC decision, Gandhi had met Narayanan and conveyed to him the party's stand.

Gandhi consulted her party colleagues shortly after Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had a meeting with his senior cabinet colleagues, including L K Advani, Jaswant Singh, George Fernandes and Pramod Mahajan on the issue.
Asked to comment on the possibility of NDA fielding Maharashtra governor P C Alexander for the post, Reddy said, “We would not like to react on the basis of rumours but only on the basis of official announcement by the NDA in this regard.”
