Stepping up pressure on the demand for handing over violence-hit Gujarat to the army, the People's Front on Monday said it has lost all faith in the state government accusing it of sponsoring terrorism.
The People's Front, which met under the chairmanship of veteran CPI (M) leader Jyoti Basu, demanded that Gujarat be handed over to the army immediately as the only way to restore normalcy In the state.
Charging the Vajpayee government with playing a dangerous game, it also urged the Centre to stop karsevaks from going to Ayodhya and to abide by the court verdict.
India's position has been lowered by the government. We have no faith in the Gujarat chief minister, Basu told reporters after the meeting held at the residence of CPI-M general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet.
He said the government had still not come out with the final toll in the communal violence in the state.
Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda demanded dismissal of the Gujarat government.
He also said that the inquiry into the Gujarat violence should be conducted by a sitting Supreme Court judge and that the culprits should be punished immediately.
Earlier, the meeting condoled the death of Lok Sabha speaker G M C Balayogi who was killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday.
