SC hearing on fresh affidavit by Delhi govt on sealing drive

Holding the Centre and Delhi government responsible for the sealing and demolition drives in the capital, the BJP on Sunday said they have been given false assurances to the people in the matter and demanded that an amnesty scheme be announced immediately for unauthorised houses and shops.

New Delhi, Sept 25: Holding the Centre and Delhi government responsible for the sealing and demolition drives in the capital, the BJP on Sunday said they have been given false assurances to the people in the matter and demanded that an amnesty scheme be announced immediately for unauthorised houses and shops.

"The government is not clear on what should be done to resolve the issue. It has submitted self-contradictory affidavits in the High Court and Supreme Court. For the last six months, Congress leaders have been giving false assurances to the people of Delhi," senior BJP leader V K Malhotra told a press conference here.

The affidavit filed by the government on legalising commercial activities in residential areas comes up for hearing in the Supreme Court today.

Malhotra went on to demand the resignations of Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy, his deputy Ajay Maken and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for failing to find a way out of the court-ordered sealing and demolition drives.

Malhotra was critical of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi also, saying they remained silent on the issues for so long.

"We are hopeful of the court giving some relief to the people. If that does not happen, the government should bring an Amnesty scheme for unauthorised houses and shops even if it requires calling a special session of Parliament," he said.

He criticised the government for allowing "wholesale" commercial establishments in residential areas, saying only the existing trading activities should have been legalised.

Malhotra also termed the categorisation of colonies for legalising shops as unjust and unconstitional.
