Senior journalist Pradeep Shinde today passed away at a private hospital here after a prolonged illness, family sources said.

He was 57 and is survived by his wife and a daughter.

Shinde was admitted a week ago to the Brahmakumari
Hospital in suburban Andheri, where he was being treated for
pneumonia.

Shinde, Bureau chief of Kerala-based Malayalam daily
`Mathrubhoomi`, was a well-known crime reporter and started
his career with the city-based `Free Press Journal` in the
early 1970s.

He worked with `Indian Express`, `Sunday Mail`,
`Mid-Day`, `Indian Post` and `The Daily` in his career
spanning over three decades.

In the 1970s and 80s, he was one of the leading crime
reporters in Mumbai and reported on activities of underworld
dons and smugglers like Vardarajan Mudaliar, Dawood Ibrahim,
Haji Mastan, Yusuf Patel and Sukhram Bakia.

He was cremated at suburban Mulund in the evening.
Several journalists attended his funeral.
