New Delhi: Google today commemorates the 86th birth anniversary of Nargis Dutt, one of India’s finest actors by dedicating a special black and white doodle to her.

A drawing of the late actress holding her dupatta with both hands is featured in the place of the Google logo.

Nargis, whose original name was Fatima Rashid was born on this day in 1929. She started out as a child actor in Bollywood but went on to become one of the most exemplary actresses of her times.

The actress is famous for her pairing with actor Raj Kapoor and remembered for her classic roles in blockbuster films like Barsaat (1949), Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Chori Chori (1956). However she reached the zenith of her career with Mehboob Khan’s Oscar-nominated Mother India in 1957. Even today, her name is synonymous with Mother India.

Nargis was also the first film actress to be accorded with the Padma Shri title by the Government of India.

In 1958, Nargis married her Mother India co-star, actor Sunil Dutt whom she fell in love during the shooting of the film. After leaving the film industry, she became a prominent social worker and was also elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha.

After a long battle with pancreatic cancer, she died on May 3, 1981 at the age of 51.

The actress who adorned the silver screen with her endearing presence will always be remembered for her grace and spirit!
