Online shoppers run out of patience in four seconds flat!

A recent study has revealed that four seconds is the maximum length of time an average online shopper will wait for a Web page to load before potentially abandoning a retail site.

Washington, Nov 10: A recent study has revealed that four seconds is the maximum length of time an average online shopper will wait for a
Web page to load before potentially abandoning a retail site.

The study ranked poor site performance as second only to high product prices and shipping costs as leading factors for dissatisfaction among
online shoppers.

The report - commissioned by Jupiter Research and Akamai, which accelerates Internet site traffic for its customers - surveyed 1058 online
shoppers on their buying habits.

The survey found that more than one-third of online shoppers abandoned sites entirely whenever they suffered a poor experience. Some 75% of
the online shoppers polled said they wouldn''t be likely to use the sites in question after they had a poor shopping experience.

"The critical takeaway from this research is that online shoppers not only demand quality site performance, they expect it. Four seconds is the
new benchmark by which a retail site will be judged, which leaves little room for errors for retailers to maintain a loyal online customer base,"

Sydney Morning Herald quoted Akamai''s Brad Rinklin as saying.

The report also found that airline tickets, accommodation and event tickets are the most popular items, while eBay is the No. 1 online retailer.
