Probe into fake godman Sarathi Baba's activity broadens

The Odisha crime branch police has broadened its investigation into the activity of arrested godman Sarathi Baba alias Santosh Roul.

Cuttack: The Odisha crime branch police has broadened its investigation into the activity of arrested godman Sarathi Baba alias Santosh Roul.

As the three-day police remand of Baba came to an end on Tuesday, a crime branch source said that the accused would be produced in the court tomorrow along with a plea to extend his remand further.

On the third day of interrogation of the so-called godman, nearly 20 persons were examined in the presence of the arrested godman.

Three separate teams of the crime branch went to various locations to corroborate the recorded statements of the arrested.

According to sources, at least 13 associates of Sarathi's Barimul Ashram in Kendrapara district were brought here in the morning for interrogation.

Later in the afternoon, a works contractor from Bhubaneswar and the Ashram's chartered accountant were also taken inside the police headquarter under tight security.

Earlier in the day, two police teams went to Kendrapara to verify certain facts in the sub-registry office pertaining to the land deals of the godman and make further searches in the lodge located inside the godman's ashram.

Another police team went to the income tax commissioner's office here to verify the tax returns of the charitable trust run by Roul in the name of his adopted son.

The sleuths have detected as many as 20 bank accounts operated by Baba and freezed ten of them having deposits of Rs 2.20 crore, sources said.
