London: A new supercomputer has been unveiled by Cambridge University which is being praised as the ` greenest ` of its kind.
This supercomputer gets its name from computing pioneer Maurice Wilkes. Named as Wilkes, this computer will be used in the development of the Square Kilometre Array ( SKA), which will be the biggest radio telescope ever made.
According to a report, Wilkes, is ranked 166th for being one of the most powerful in the world, is the equivalent of 4,000 typical desktop computers all working together.
Director of the Cambridge High Performance Computing Service, Dr. Paul Calleja said that being energy-efficient as well as just powerful is the big challenge in supercomputing today and their system makes an important step forward in this regard.
The report also said that the supercomputer has an energy efficiency of 3,361 Mega-flops per watt and comes in 2nd place on the Green 500 ranking of the most energy-efficient computers.
