The BDR personnel also fired two rounds in the air to scare away the villager in Bhimpur near Balurghat area of the district, the sources said.
Two BDR men illegally entered the village, 75 metres from the border, at 1:00 pm yesterday and raided the house of one
Samsul Islam Mandal on the pretext of inquiring about his sister who allegedly crossed over to this country from Bangladesh recently, sources in the BSF's Patiram headquarters said.
Mandal, his brother and sister managed to snatch a rifle from the BDR personnel during the ensuing scuffle and bolted the door forcing the BDR men to return to their camp. They, however, came back with 10 other colleagues besides some villagers to recover the rifle, the sources said.
The BDR men fired two rounds in the air to scare away Mandal and finally barged into the house to recover the snatched rifle following which they returned to Bangladesh.
The BDR personnel also took away a motor cycle, a mobile phone besides cash and valuables from Mandal's house, which stands at a isolated spot close to the border fence, they said.
BSF jawans, posted at Bhaigarh border outpost, one km from Bhimpur village, rushed to the area after hearing the gunshots, but the group had left by that time, the sources said adding the torn part of a BDR uniform, two live cartridges and broken part of a rifle have been recovered.
