Cold wave intensifies in Kathmandu, snowfall in upper reaches

Cold wave intensified in the capital today as mercury plummeted to 2.9 degrees even as snowfall in the higher reaches disrupted traffic movement.

capital today as mercury plummeted to 2.9 degrees even as
snowfall in the higher reaches disrupted traffic movement.

Temperature around Kathmandu plunged to almost zero
degree continued today as Kharidhunga of Dolakha district was
covered with two feet snow. Pushpalal highway in the district
was also blocked briefly due to snowfall.

Buses plying from Jiri and Charikot were stranded at
Kharidhunga, while those from Kathmandu were stranded at
Mudhe, Sindhupalchok as thick snow blocked the road.

Six inch snowfall has been reported from Tehrathum,
Sankhuwasabha and Dhankuta after an interval of four years.
Although normal life was affected due to plunging temperature
in terai, people from Dharan, Biratnagar and other parts
thronged Dhankuta to enjoy the snowfall.

Jumla, a tourist spot in north west Nepal, witnessed
minus 6 degree Celsius while Jomsom, another tourist spot, the
temperature was recorded at minus 4 degree Celsius.

However, festivities and revelry on the New Year eve
continued with discotheque, hotels and restaurants in
Kathmandu gearing up for year-ending celebrations.

`Swasthani Vrata`, a month-long fast by married Hindu
women beginning today, was observed religiously as around 260
of them took bath at Sali river braving cold.

The met forecast said that chill weather will prevail in
coming few days,even as reports claim at least six people were
killed across Nepal past one week.
