Pakistani President remits sentences of prisoners

Islamabad: Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has remitted the sentences of prisoners as a goodwill gesture on the occasion of Eid.

Zardari consulted with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani for remitting the sentences on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi on Friday, Geo TV reported.

The reduction of sentences ranges from 45 days to total remission in different categories. Prisoners convicted for life in prison, except those convicted for murder, espionage and anti-state activities, will see their sentences reduced by 90 days.

Other categories include robbery, dacoity and kidnapping.

He also granted total remission to male prisoners who are 65 years of age or above and female prisoners who are 60 years of age and above who have undergone one-third of their jail sentences, except those involved in homicide and terrorist acts.
