New Delhi: Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) today said that it has generated over six crore Aadhaar numbers in Uttar Pradesh which is nearly one third of the state's population.

"Over 6 crore Aadhaar numbers have been generated in Uttar Pradesh by the UIDAI out of the total population of 19.98 crore (as per Census 2011)," an official statement said.

Uttar Pradesh is among the four states alloted to UIDAI for Aadhaar enrollments this year, while 18 others were allocated earlier.

At present, more than 2.5 lakh residents are being enrolled every day in Uttar Pradesh through 5,781 enrollment stations functioning in 71 districts of the state. The enrollments are expected to gather pace with engagement of agencies by the state registrar, it added.

UIDAI has issued over 70.7 crore Aadhaar numbers across the country. UIDAI has covered over 90 per cent population of the nine states and union territories (UTs) including Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh, while seven states and UTs have the coverage of 70 to 90 per cent.

UID numbers enable residents to avail many services such as opening bank accounts and obtaining SIM cards, PAN cards and LPG connection, among others.

Aadhaar facilitates "anytime, anywhere" online authentication of a resident through universal verification of one?s identity based on the demographic and biometric information of an individual, thereby eliminating any chance of duplication or fraud.
