NHRC seeks report from UP DGP on rape by cops

The National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh DGP and the SP of Sant Kabir Nagar district.

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh DGP and the SP of Sant Kabir Nagar district on the media reports of a rape inside a police outpost.

Terming the incident as a serious issue of human rights violations, the rights body suo motu took cognisance of the reports and asked the DGP and the district SP to file a report within four weeks.

The incident took place after a man, against whom a non-bailable warrants were issued by a district court, was arrested on May 26 by policemen at Bakhira Police outpost of Sant Kabir Nagar district.
According to the media reports, his wife had approached the police outpost with a request to release her husband, but she was raped allegedly by the outpost in-charge and three other constables.

The woman`s husband filed a complaint against the policemen when he was released from jail on May 29.
