New Delhi: Congress on Tuesday reacted sharply
to UP government boycotting a high-level meeting convened by
the Centre for development of Bundelkhand and accused the
state government of obstructing the development of the region.

"UP government has always put obstacles in the path of
development. This step (of boycotting the meeting) once again
proves that the state government has no interest in the
development of Bundelkhand region," AICC general secretary
in-charge for UP Digvijay Singh told reporters here.

The Centre today convened the meeting at Orchcha in
Madhya Pradesh, which falls in the Bundelkhand region, to
discuss the development of the region through NREGA.

However, the UP government chose to stay away from the
meeting, questioning the Centre`s "intentions".

Attacking UP Chief Minister Mayawati over the episode,
Singh said, "on one hand she talks about package (for
Bundelkhand) while on the other hand, she boycott the meeting
called by the Centre for the development of the region...
whenever the Centre has tried to give help, the UP government
has created problems."

The Centre has a plan of 1.5 lakh crore for the
development of the region, but the state government is not
showing any interest, the Congress leader alleged.

In August, a delegation led by AICC general secretary
Rahul Gandhi had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking
setting up of a separate authority for the development of
Bundelkhand region, a move which was strongly opposed by the
BSP.
