It was a firecracker factory: CID on West Midnapore blast

Amidst allegations that bombs were being manufactured at the illegal firecracker factory at Pingla in West Midnapore district where 12 persons were killed in an explosion on Wednesday night, CID Friday stressed that only firecrackers were produced there.

"It was a firecracker factory and only small crackers were produced there," DIG, CID (operations) D K Adak said.

He said samples were collected from the blast site by central forensic laboratory and they would be sent for investigation.

DIG, Midnapore Range, Vishal Garg, said that CID ADG Rajiv Kumar will be visiting the area during the day.

IGP (Western Range) S N Gupta had stated yesterday that twelve charred bodies were recovered from the blast spot, while four had sustained injuries.

The house owner Ranjan Maiti was arrested, he had said.

Police said the factory was illegal and all the victims were employees of the factory who were brought from Murshidabad district.

BJP state President Rahul Sinha yesterday demanded investigation into the explosion by (NIA) alleging bombs were being manufactured at the illegal factory.
