Passenger dies after being beaten up by autorickshaw driver in Bengal

A passenger Saturday died after being allegedly beaten up by an autorickshaw driver following an argument in Birbhum district, a senior police officer said.

Suri: A passenger Saturday died after being allegedly beaten up by an autorickshaw driver following an argument in Birbhum district, a senior police officer said.

Superintendent of Police of Birbhum Alok Rajoria said "a group of six persons were on their way to Rampurhat railway station from Tarapith temple in an autorickshaw. At Gopalpur Mode, the auto become off-routed as the autorickshaw driver refused to go further."

"An altercation then broke out between the passengers and the driver and the driver assaulted one of them who fell down and became unconscious. The unconscious passenger when shifted to Rampurhat hospital, the doctors declared him brought dead," Rajoria said.

The deceased has been identified as Swapan Naskar (46), a resident of Shyamnagar in North 24 Parganas district, he said.
