Ankara: Twelve people were killed today in the Turkish capital Ankara when a bus ploughed into commuters waiting at a bus stop, Turkish media and officials said.

The bus hit passengers waiting at the bus stop in the Dikimevi district of Ankara due brake failure, the health ministry said.

"It's a very unfortunate accident," said Health Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu, quoted by Turkish media.

"A public bus ploughed into commuters waiting at the bus stop due to brake failure. A legal process will follow," he added.

At least eight others were wounded, the CNN-Turk and NTV channels reported.

Ankara governor Mehmet Kiliclar said the driver was in good health and had not suffered any kind of heart attack.

"The driver is on the way to the police station now. His initial testimony is that 'I lost control of the bus.'"
