47 people have been killed in an attack launched by Colombia’s leftist rebels in the northwest of the country. As many as 36 guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the nation's largest rebel group,
and seven soldiers were among the dead, said General Eduardo Contreras, commander of the first army division.
Two of the others killed were police officers and another
two were civilians. Gen Contreras said the battle had started on Saturday with a FARC attack on the village of Carmen De Atrato.
But army troops backed by warplanes launched a
counter offensive, inflicting heavy losses on the guerrillas.
