Madrid: Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy suffered a scare on Wednesday whne he was punched in the face by a 17-year-old youth, during a campaign appearance for Sunday`s general election in Galicia.

The 60-year-old conservative Spanish leader was walking through the city of Pontevedra on the latest stop of his push for re-election in Sunday polls when the incident happened.


A young man punched Rajoy hard on the side of his head, knocking his glasses off, as he walked through the town of Pontevedra. The young man, a minor, was subsequently arrested, police confirmed separately.


A video of the incident shows the youth, wearing a black jacket and sporting a crew cut, punching the prime minister hard on the left side of his face before being wrestled to the ground.


Rajoy sent a message on Twitter, thanking his supporters and reassuring the public.


"I`m fine, and on the way to a rally in Coruna," he said.
