Arvind Kejriwal meets President, union ministers: As it happened

A day after registering a historic win in the Assembly polls, Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi's next chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will meet President Pranab Mukherjee Wednesday evening.

7:50 pm:  We met Arvind Kejriwal ji and embraced him. We will meet him again and hold talks, says Nitish Kumar.

7:35 pm: Launching a scathing attack at BJP leader Kiran Bedi over her fatwa remark, AAP leader Raghav Chadha has said that she needs to introspect rather than blaming such factors for her defeat.

Further on AVAM issue, Chadha told ANI, “Everybody knows that the BJP has been cropping up organisations from AVAM to IMAM to malign AAP's image.”

7:30 pm: Arvind Kejriwal also briefly met JD(U) senior leader Nitish Kumar outside President's House, says Sisodiya.

7:00 pm: After meeting President Pranab Mukherjee, AAP senior leader Manish Sisodiya told media that it was a courtesy call and no important agenda was discussed.

He further added that the President gifted them two books – Constitution of India and Thoughts and Reflections. Latter has been penned down by him.  

6:30 pm: Kejriwal has reached President's House, claim reports.

5:50 pm: BJP leader and former IPS officer, Kiran Bedi, has hold 'fatwas' responsible for her defeat in the Delhi Assembly polls.

“These Fatwas have an impact as they mean a direction. Should EC allow such last moment directions, is it good for democracy,” she was quoted as saying by ANI.

5:45 pm: We are hopeful that AAP will formulate and implement good policies for the people of Delhi, says CPM leader Prakash Karat.

5:31 pm: AAP's newly-elected MLA Naresh Balyan told ANI that he has nothing to with liquor seizure issue.

5:15 pm: Delhi CM-designate Arvind Kejriwal has refused to take security cover. Z+ security will cut off Kejriwal from people. He's 'Janta ka CM' and wants to be with them. However, there will be certain amount of security because he is in that position and we have to keep it in mind: Ashutosh was quoted as saying by ANI.

4:40 pm: Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu gives details about his meet with Kejriwal and Sisodia. The BJP leader says the Centre has assured full support to next AAP government in Delhi. Here's what Naidu tweeted: 


4:30 pm: Anna Hazare says he will not attend Arvind Kejriwal's swearing-in ceremony. However, the social activist maintained that if the AAP chief invited him for tea, he would graciously accept it.

While congratulating his former team member Kejriwal, Hazare says people voted for AAP as BJP failed to fulfil its poll promises.

Delhi polls debacle is Narendra Modi's defeat and not Kiran Bedi's, Hazare adds.

4:15 pm: Kejriwal gives details about his meet with Rajnath and Naidu on Twitter. The AAP chief invited both the Union Ministers for the oath taking ceremony.

1:45: Police Commissioner BS Bassi says newly-elected AAP MLA Naresh Balyan would be called for questioning within two days over the recovery of liquor bottles from a warehouse near his home.

12:55 pm: Commenting on the Income Tax notice, AAP member Atishi Marlena welcomed that the decision saying that from the first moment party said that it want an investigation. The I-T department issued a notice to the AAP over alleged money laundering allegations levelled against it by the volunteer group AVAM.

12:20 pm: Ahead of Cabinet formation, reports are saying that newly-elected AAP MLAs Jarnail Singh, Manish Sisodia, Gopal Rai and Adarsh Shastri will be given key posts in the government.

What is astonishing that AAP leader Rakhi Birla, who was minister of Women & Child, Social Welfare and Languages in Delhi during AAP's 49-day regime might not find any place in the Cabinet.

12:05 pm: Besides PM Modi, AAP will invite Kiran Bedi, Anna Hazare and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit for the swearing-in ceremony at Ramlila Ground on February 14.

Ahead of swearing-in ceremony, the AAP will also hold a roadshow from Kaushambi to Ramlila Maidan.

10:45 am: Kejriwal granted exemption from personal appearance by Delhi court in a defamation complaint filed against him by an advocate.

10:25 am: Commenting on Delhi poll results, AAP member HS Phoolka says: “With big success comes big responsibility. The entire nation has a lot of expectations from AAP”.

10:10 am: Income Tax issues notice to AAP on donation row. The party has to reply to the notice by February 16.

AAP Volunteer Action Manch (AVAM) had accused AAP of receiving Rs 2 crore last year through four "dubious" companies, a claim which was strongly rejected by AAP.

9:50 am: After meeting Naidu, Sisoida briefs reporters outside Nirman Bhawan. 

Sisodia says we requested for Centre's assistance in carrying forward work of regularisation of unauthorised colonies and the demand of full statehood for Delhi be fulfilled. We also asked him for assistance in setting up more colleges, schools and parking space.

Naidu has assured Centre's full cooperation to AAP government for the development of Delhi, Sisodia says.

9:15 am: The AAP has said it will invite PM Modi to Arvind Kejriwal's swearing-in ceremony as Delhi chief minister on February 14 at the Ramlila Grounds. 

"We will invite the Prime Minister to the oath-taking ceremony of Arvind Kejriwal," AAP spokesperson Ashish Khaitan said. 

9:00 am: A day after registering a historic win in the Assembly polls, Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi's next chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will meet President Pranab Mukherjee Wednesday evening.

The AAP on Tuesday scored scored a landslide victory in Delhi, delivering to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) its first defeat since its historic Lok Sabha triumph and reducing the Congress, which ruled the capital for 15 years till 2013, to a virtual nonentity.

In the 70-member Delhi Assembly, the Kejriwal-led political outfit won 67 seats, BJP managed only 3 and the Congress failed to open its account.

8:45 am: The AAP leader is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. AAP leader Manish Sisodia Tuesday confirmed that Kejriwal is meeting the PM on Wednesday.

PM Modi had telephoned Kejriwal and congratulated him for party's victory in Delhi Assembly Elections. While congratulating the AAP chief, the PM assured Centre's full support Centre to the Delhi government.

8:30 am: The AAP convenor is also expected to meet Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu to deliberate on steps to be taken for overall development of Delhi.

8:00 am: Kejriwal has also sought an appointment with Home Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss issues related to law and order in the national capital. The two leaders are expected to meet at 4:30 pm.

Singh congratulated the AAP chief for the stunning victory in the Delhi elections and assured him all help for the development of the national capital.

In an election that was billed by the opposition as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the AAP tornado threw veterans of both BJP and Congress into the electoral dustbin in their traditional bastions. BJP leaders accepted the defeat as a "setback" but dismissed suggestions that it was a vote against the Modi government's performance.

BJP's chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi, who was inducted into the party last minute to counter Kejriwal, lost from Krishna Nagar constituency, a seat held by the BJP since 1993.

The 46-year-old Kejriwal will take oath as chief minister at the Ramlila grounds on Feb 14 - the same date last year that Kejrwial resigned as chief minister, ending his 49-day stint heading the Delhi government.
