New Delhi: India`s Satywart Kadian has won a bronze medal in the 96-kg freestyle category at the World Junior Wrestling Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Satyawart produced a clinical display of freestyle combat to get the better of Turkey`s Ali Bonceoglu to open India`s account at the championships yesterday.
Earlier, Satyawart`s march was halted by Armenia` Viktor Kazishvili in the semifinals, as he ran out of steam and lost the bout in the first period itself.
The burly Indian had won against three opponents, including a Kazakh and an Iranian grappler, before making it to the last-four stages.
In the other weight categories, Indian hopes were dented early after Asian junior champion Mangal Kadyan lost to Mehmed Zeyti Feraim of Bulgaria in his opening bout of the 50-kg category.
Parveen (60kg) lost in a close second-round encounter to Shota Phartenadze of Georgia after a loss against Venezuela`s Wilfredo Aogusto Rodriguez Bocaney in the opening bout.
Trailing 0-2 after the period, Parveen lost the contest 2-3 in a gruelling duel at Arena Armeetz.
In the 74kg freestyle category, Pardeep started well as he matted Seung Chan Park of South Korea in his first bout.
But Russia`s Alan Zaseev thrashed him in the quarterfinals. However, Pardeep was handed a lifeline to aim at a bronze after the Russian entered the finals.
He had no problem in setting aside the challenge from Switzerland`s Nicolas Peter Christen 2-3 6-0 in the first repechage bout.
But local lad Engin Rashid Ismail was way too superior for the Indian grappler in the next contest as he bowed out of medal contention.
