The global issue has been identified as a huge problem and has been the subject of ongoing media attention since 1915. In order to find a solution to food wastage, a campaign called Love Food, Hate Waste was also launched in 2007.

According to studies, 30% of all food in the United States, worth US$48.3 billion, is thrown away each year. To add to the woes, it is also estimated that about half of the water used to produce this food also goes waste, since agriculture is the largest human use of water.
