Top 10 ODI cricket scores: South Africa score 3rd highest total in India

New Delhi: A belligerent batting display from the South African demolished a Indian bowling attack in the fifth and final One-Day International match to score third highest total at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Following is the updated top 10 team scores in One-day International cricket:

  1. 443/9 by Sri Lanka vs the Netherlands, Amstelveen, July 2006

  2. 439/2 by South Africa vs West Indies, Johannesburg, January 2015

  3. 438/4 by South Africa vs India, Mumbai, today*

  4. 438 by South Africa vs Australia, Johannesburg, March 2006

  5. 434/4 by Australia vs South Africa, Johannesburg, March 2006

  6. 418/5 by South Africa vs Zimbabwe, Potchefstroom, Sep 2006

  7. 418/5 by India vs West Indies, Indore, Dec 2011

  8. 414/7 by India vs Sri Lanka, Rajkot, Dec 2009

  9. 413/5 India vs Bermuda, Port of Spain, Mar 2007

  10. 411/8 by Sri Lanka vs India, Rajkot, Dec 2009

After winning the toss on a placid Mumbai track, Proteas openers Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla set the tone with a 33-run opening stand from just four overs, then de Kock combined with Faf du Plessis for a 154-run second wicket partnership in little over 21 overs.

But the real carnage started with the arrival of ever dangerous AB de Villiers. de Kock (109 off 87), du Plessis (133 of 115) who was forced to retire hurt, and de Villiers (119 off 60) all completed centuries with strike rates more than 100. This is the second time in the history to make three batsmen to make centuries in one innings. The previous instance was also by the South Africans, against West Indies January this year.

The visiting team went onto make 438/4, which is the second highest total. This is also the highest score against India, eclipsing Sri Lanka's 411/8 in Rajkot, Dec 2009.

In the process, South Africa hit 20 sixes, 38 fours. Bhuvneshwar Kumar's sorry figures of 10-0-106-1 was most expensive by an Indian bowler in ODIs. He is the second Indian to concede 100+ runs in ODI, after Vinay Kumar's 9-0-102-1 against Australia in November, 2013.

The worst bowling figures, in terms of runs conceding, is still in the name of Aussie Mick Lewis, 10-0-113-0 against South Africa in March, 2006.

The total was also the highest ODI score in Wankhede Stadium, bettering New Zealand's 358/6 against Canada in 2011.
