HC asks state authorities to consider plea on power for IPL

Madurai: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court Bench on Thursday asked the state Chief Secretary and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Chairman to consider a plea not to transmit and supply electricity to M.A.Chidambaram Stadium for holding the Indian Premier league matches, scheduled to be held at Chennai from April 4.

The petitioner A Benitto, a lawyer, had contended that Tamil Nadu could not afford power for the matches when people were struggling due to power crisis.

Instead of benefiting a few thousand of audience, the power could be used for the benefit of students, industrialists, factories, production units, manufacturers, exporters and medical units, he added.

He also charged the Centre with adopting step-motherly treatment towards Tamil Nadu by not easing the power shortage.

Disposing of the petition, a Division Bench, comprising justices Chitra Venkataraman and R Karuppiah, issued directions to the respondents to consider the representation and pass orders on or before April 4.
