Established in 1964, the Eden Garden is ranks among the world's most iconic sporting venues. The first Test match was held at this venue when England played India in 1934.

The ground is owned by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

The stadium underwent redevelopment work ahead of the 2011 World Cup as four Group stage games were scheduled to be held here.

However, since the renovation work was behind schedule, India-England game was shifted to Bengaluru.

The crowd at Eden Garden is considered not just vocal, but very passionate. At times, this has resulted in them behaving badly, even rioting, especially when the home side has been on the verge of losing a match.

On the flip side, they have often spurred on the home team to help them produce some magnificent results on the pitch.

Some of India's most historic performances have come at this venue. VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid partnership in 2001, Harbhajan Singh's hat-trick against Australia and Anil Kumble's superlative show against Pakistan, have all helped India register memorable victories at the ground.

The two ends of this stadium are called High Court end and Pavilion end and is equipped with floodlights.

Eden Gardens is home to the Bengal team during the domestic season and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
