Wellington: Cricket could become a reality in the next five years as almost 33 international sports federation have been invited to apply as potential new entrants for the biggest showdown in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics games.

Although Baseball and softball are viewed as favourites due to their popularity in Japan, Cricket is also pushing for a spot alongside games like Squash, Karate and Surfing, Stuff.co.nz reported.

According to the Tokyo organizing committee, a list of shortlisted games will be declared on June 22.

Finalists will then make a presentation in August and the organizing committee will make its recommendations to the International Olympic Committee by the end of September. However, decisions will not be disclosed until August 2016, ahead of the Rio Olympics.
