New Delhi: Cricket South Africa named hard-hitting batsman AB de Villiers as the full-time Test team captain.

The experienced world class batsman took over the reigns from Hashim Amla who had stepped aside from the skipper's role after the third Test match against England.

AB de Villiers saw his side win the final Test against the visitors although they lost the overall series 1-2.

De Villiers' appointment as permanent skipper comes at the right time given South Africa's poor performances in the longest format after back to back series losses against India and England.

De Villiers always dreamt of leading the national side in Test and it is under him South Africa can get back to the summit.

De Villiers expressed his delight at being appointed the Proteas Test captain. He stated that he is excited to lead the side into a new era.

“This is an exciting time for South African cricket, and I am honoured to have been asked to captain the Test team into a new era. I thoroughly enjoyed captaining in the last two Tests against England, and although I still have a lot to learn in this role, it's a new challenge that I'm excited to take on,” De Villiers said.
