Wenger says knew Van Persie would spur Man U to PL title

London: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted it is painful to see his former player Robin Van Persie’s goals helping Manchester United on their quest for yet another Premier League title, but the Frenchman added he was already expecting this to happen. Wenger said it also hurts to see United so much ahead of them in the title race, mainly due to Van Persie’s goals, the Sun reports.
The Gunners take on current champions Manchester City on Sunday and could be an incredible 21 points behind leaders United, who signed Van Persie for 22 million pounds, by kick-off. Wenger added when a club sells a player of Van Persie’s caliber to their rivals than it is obvious they would suffer, adding that the Dutch international is one of the best strikers in the world and a guaranteed goal-scorer. Van Persie, who has 20 goals overall for United, snubbed a move to City, who are seven points behind their Manchester neighbours, and when asked whether his former striker would have had the same effect at the Etihad, Wenger said he would have certainly scored same number of goals with the current champions too since he is at the peak of his career.
