Berlin: German football legend and former Bayern Munich boss Uli Hoeness has begun serving a three years and six months jail sentence for tax evasion, his lawyers say Tuesday. Hoeness, who won the European Championship in 1972 and World Cup in 1974 with the German team, is serving his sentence at Landsberg am Lech prison in southern Germany. The 62-year-old former striker was found guilty of defrauding tax authorities of 28.5 million euros in March. During the trial, he said that it "was the biggest mistake" of his life and that he accepted "the consequences of his mistake". He also admitted hiding wealth in secret Swiss bank accounts while obsessively "gambling" on stock and currency markets for years before seeking to come clean in return for immunity from prosecution.
