Mahindra beat Churchill 4-1; move to second spot in I-League

Margao: Mohammed Rafi and Murritala Ali
scored a brace each to guide Mahindra United to a convincing
4-1 win over defending champion Musli Power Churchill Brothers
in the 14th round of the I-League football tournament today.

The victory in the match played at Nehru Stadium at
Fatorda here propelled Mahindra to the second spot with 25
points from 14 matches. They are behind table topper Dempo
Sports Club, who have 26 points from 13 matches.

Mahindra, who led 1-0 at the half time, scored through
Rafi (16th, 70th) and Ali (56th and injury time) to post a
convincing win over their formidable rivals.

Churchill looked largely off-colour and failed to play
a cohesive game. Although they created a couple of early
scoring chances, they were unable to capitalise on them.

Mahindra earned a penalty in the 16th minute when
Sushant Mathew was brought down by Rowilson Rodrigues after
both went to tackle an aerial ball inside the box. Rafi, who

pressure on the rival`s defence. They earned another penalty
in the 56th minute when Ali was brought down inside the box by
Churchill defender Dhanachandra Singh.

Ali, who took the kick, scored the second goal after
keeper Arindam Bhattacharya blocked the shot but could not
stop the ball rolling into the net.
