Want to beat Bhutan by a big margin: Savio

New Delhi: The job has become tough after a draw against Afghanistan but Indian football coach Savio Medeira has not lost hope of topping their group as they are aiming to score big against Bhutan in their second league match of the SAFF Championships, on Sunday.

Displaying a mediocre show, India played out a 1-1 draw against minnows Afghanistan in their campaign opener on Friday and Medeira said the home side will have to win their Group A match on Sunday at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium by any means. "We have to win tomorrow. There is no other way. A win in our opening match would have been ideal but now we have to win tomorrow. I have told this to the boys and they know their job," Medeira said after team training session at Ambedkar Stadium. "We also want to beat them by a big margin. Bhutan lost 0-3 to Sri Lanka and so we want to win by a bigger margin. In case of same points, goal difference is important, we want to top our group," he added. Medeira refused to take Bhutan lightly as he himself had been the assistant coach when India struggled to beat the same opponents 2-1 in 2008 SAFF Championships. "I remember we had a difficult time in that match and we won via a last minute extra time goal," Medeira said, recollecting the semifinal match against Bhutan 2008 SAFF Championships when Gouramangi scored the match-winner in the 120th minute. Medeira ruled out too many changes in the playing eleven. "It`s no time to experiment. We did not have enough time to prepare for the tournament. So I am not going to change much in the team," he said. "We are keeping our shape and we will continue with 4-4-2 formation as we cannot experiment now. To change the formation we need to have practice for some days," he said when asked if he would go for more attacking style of football tomorrow to score more goals. Asked about the status of left back Samir Naik who twisted his ankle, Medeira said, "The report did not say anything but he is having swelling. So our medical team will see and we will take a call tomorrow." Captain Climax Lawrence said that India would look for an early goal so that his side can win by a big margin. "We need an early goal tomorrow. Once we take the lead early it could be easy for us to go for more goals and win by a big margin," Lawrence said. PTI
