Karunanidhi underwent tracheostomy at the Kauvery Hospital here to optimise his breathing.

Briefing the media, the Congress vice president said, Karunanidhi was doing well and the doctors told him that the DMK leader will return home soon.

"I wanted to personally wish him a speedy recovery, happy to see that he is doing well," Gandhi said after meeting ailing Karunanidhi.

The former Tamil Nadu chief minister was admitted to Kauvery Hospital Thursday night with breathing difficulty as well as throat and lung infection.

DMK was Congress' alliance partner during UPA II rule.

Karunanidhi was discharged from the same hospital on December 08 after being admitted on December 01 for optimisation of nutrition and hydration.

The doctors had then advised the DMK chief to take rest and not to meet people in a bid to contract any infection.

The drug-induced allergy has virtually kept the 93-year-old leader out of public activities for the past one month.
